Here's an idea I'll steal from some RPG's like EVE, but I think would be excellent for an RTS, so think about it!
If every player had the ability to write a short empire biography, let's say 4000 character (w/ colors and text type enabled!), I think the story would only become that much more enveloping. RPG'ers want plot, I think, and every RPG'er that can be pulled in to RTS means a stronger community and a brighter future! :P
Plus, it's always fun to read what someone else thinks sounds like a good story, it's good for character development and assessment.
Neat idea. I think auto generating a story for them (different for every body) up to the point where they depart to form a new nation would be interesting because it could include bits of information from their region of the galaxy about the past wars and the unknown fate of the major nations involved. This would be more like their past civilizations myth than their story. Then allow the players to extend the story with information about their mission, leaders and such in specific if they want.
Does this sound like a good idea?
I love that idea! The auto generation would be a bit tough unless it was really simple, but even so, that would be great.
I completely agree with you. A couple months ago I think I remember outlining a very similar idea to yours, or at least I remember thinking about it.
I love game stories and the more depth the better. When players are given the option to add to the story, I think the possibilities are endless in terms of the richness of our in-game cultures.
I wrote the FG game story with same thoughts in mind as you too, Craig. I'm looking forward to creating a galaxy map where I can pinpoint locations and regions as the settings of our back story. With this, each area of the galaxy will have a story connected to it, which will give the players within those areas a sense of purpose, as if they are continuing an already rich and ongoing history.
Matt, remember that the relations between the stars are continually shifting, and therefor the old empires are quite fragmented. The relations of distance from the center however remain roughly the same so our story might be somewhat ring based. If needed we can easily lock together some groups of stars (just edit their orbital periods to be identical). I really like where this is going. I think the story aspect will come out very well if we can stick to this plan.
Your right, I had forgotten about the relevant physics involved with the galaxy…
But that can actually work to our advantage. For instance, various relics or something of that sort will have spread out over time, which adds to the mystery of how certain things fit together, and also spreads out content relevant to the story away from a specific region. I don't know if im explaining my thought correctly though…
Stars near each other (especially ones ahead or behind each other) will stay together quite well, and we could keep then exactly sysnced quite easlly if desired.
And shouldn't our hundreds of star systems all have names? Maybe the players can name them. Whether or not they are named all the star systems and players should have dynamic web pages generated by our server so they can link each other's stories and such in or out of the game. Maybe the amount of information available would depend on your login (you could get more information about your status and star systems than about other peoples), but all the stories should be able to bee seen by everyone.
Hey guys, I know no-one knows me yet, but I dropped an intro earlier.

I actually think that's pretty cool, like in the way that artifacts in the Mayan/Incan area were found with depictions of Elephants and other animals from Africa, and the middle east while never actually having been there, etc. Creates some interesting mystery aspects of a story.
YES!
I totally agree.
But making the relics would be tricky.
Can there be mythical creatures? Genocide? The Seed of Life? The Flower of Life? The tetrahedron?
How about… The tablets depict various pre-release shots of Craig's planetary-rendering :)
Note: The Seed of Life is a shape which can be constructed without using any dimensions (it is zero-dimensional) yet can also be viewed and constructed in two dimensions.
Well, I certainly like the idea of including specific systems in your story. Most of the time the plot elements in a game happen far away, or in some place you can't really change, but if there are worlds in this game that represent something important to a faction, clan, or race, that would encourage action around that world. I love that idea. As for the naming, I'd say, for the most part, stick with registry numbers and allow the users to play with the names. I don't know how the names are going to be visible, but if they are the way they are in Mankind, this would add a better way of defining empire borders and a degree of stealth if desired. If a player didn't want to be found, they could just leave the system un named, but if a player wanted a system off limits, and could protect it, they could name it "STAY OUT". I think that's a great idea. However, going back to the issue of plot mixed with gaming, those special systems/worlds should have static names as to maintain their value. This way, if you don't want to link the stars, and I don't think you should for realism sake, you don't need to, just explain in the plot that these empires were around when the stars were in different alignment. That would create a sort of treasure hunt if you included relics and that sort of thing.
Wow, I'm really getting into this!
Go team, GO! :)
I like your idea. I think we will use the registry numbers as the name, and the current owner can set the subtitle.
Registry numbers are boring and uninformative; we can use actual star naming conventions. Why not?
I'm glad you really getting into the project, but it will be a while before you have any application to play with. We might make something simple (like a simplified galaxy viewer) available sometime within the next few months, but don't expect a game any time soon. For the time being we will be very happy to have you around to contribute opinions and ideas.
It is nice to have a personal description, yet a biography is more specific.
I think that this is a good idea, and is easy to implement.
I have played games where everyone has a personal description, and it adds a nice touch to the gameplay.
How do we want to do player-descriptions for the pre-alpha release?
Just a comments box about yourself on your profile? Should players have profile-pages?
