Random, or selective?
Homeworld Selection
PhenocaPhenoca 1211766525|%e %b %Y, %H:%M %Z|agohover

Are players homeworlds based on random chance, a selective algorithm, or the location that the player selects?
Initially, do we want everyone starting-off in the same solar system, or on the same planet (and adding land-mass as new players colonize the planet).

How many solar systems should the galaxy start-off with?
(I recommend three, just so that we can have players starting diplomat arguments over territory in new systems, whenever the galaxy is expanded/new systems added.)

Later on, initial colonization could be based on random variables, or even on a colony ship, or a choice between random-location and getting a colony ship (if you know someone in the game, or are a new player and want to start on a relatively unpopulated planet).

Also, what was everyone's opinion on colonization of moons?

The new player will start with a large fleet of colony ships. I think this fleet should start out in a coalition (feudal, federation, etc.) headquarters system. This means that the new player would have to choose what coalition to join first. If they don't want to join a coalition right away, they start in a random, un-inhabited system.

It does not matter if the celestial body is a moon or not. Let me explain:
An Earth-sized body could be orbiting a gas giant. It is a moon but it is planet sized and can be colonized. I believe that anything large enough should be able to be colonized. There is artificial gravity in the ships, why not on smaller bodies? Obviously gas giants are off-limits. Earth's Moon is fair game though. Air-tight buildings can house people. Tunnels can also be excavated.

There is an immense amount of options when colonizing something.

I would personally disagree with having "artificial gravity". I see no need for it. You can colonize an astroid without it. Considering that you would be in an air tight environment, even if there was no gravity, you couldn't float away (You can simply grab the ceiling, and throw your self where you want to go).

Currently the engine only supports colonies on planets, but there are no other objects in the game yet, and when there are, they can be allowed.

I just wrote a summary on the "Beginning of FG" the other day. It generally goes over what the player enters into initially when joining the game. I think it will answer your questions one starting locations and homeworlds.

I'll be posting the summary on the dev site shortly. Under the rules for these new documentation pages I'll be writing, you can debate anything you don't agree with in the per-page discussion thread.

I'll edit this post to provide a link to the new page when I've made it.

EDIT: Here is the link: link

For those of you who cannot access the forums Matt linked to:

When the game begins, the player is put into the role of a colonial leader who has recently begun a journey in search of a new home for his people. The small fleet of colony ships available are the ones that were used to leave the colonist's old homes. The fleet is placed in space somewhere on the edge of civilization, where established colonies stand adjacent to the vast unknown reaches the galaxy. This placement gives the player a choice from the very first moment of entering the game: whether to continue onward and settle in the scarcely-populated outer regions, or to turn around and attempt to make a new life amidst the already-developed communities throughout known space.

Nice documentation :)

Hi, Fwubbers Here..

OOH! That gives me an idea!

Why not have some of the transport ships slightly/heavily (Up to you) damaged?

I mean, why would you be looking for a new home, and indeed, for your people, if your old home hasn't become hostile/invaded/un-inhabitable?

Perhaps if you start out as 1 Affliation or another, different (slight) things happen?

Ex: You're starting as a Neutral Colony, Deep in what most people would consider "Barely Populated", and so you have been Hampered and Beaten by other Affliations (Pirates?), trying to Capture you so you could work for them, But since you escaped, you're relatively fine, despite a few mid/low damages.

BUT, if you started out in 'Developed' or Safer space, you dont have much Damages, Probably none, as your Backstory could include Legal Agreements, or indeed, Actually having been Escorted by Friendly Forces for unknown reasons.

Just a quick Thought, not a Full Idea.
